Theodor Storm's House - 1
The Storm-House is not a 'memorial' to Storm, but a serious attempt to reflect the house as it actually was in Storm's time. To this end visitors are free to wander through it beautifully decorated and accurately furnished rooms, to sense and capture the atmosphere of the house at the time. To furnish the rooms precisely as they were was an immensely difficult task. No descriptions or plans, barring a rough sketch of the house in Storm's hand (1866), exist, and all details had to be extracted from Storm's, friends' and the family's correspondence. Many items of furniture and pictures were donated to the museum by surviving members of the family. Some items are from his house in Hademarschen, particularly the writing desk from his study upon which he completed his classic, Der Schimmelreiter. Walking around the elegantly furnished and colorful rooms today is a truly rewarding experience for any visitor. It is a journey to the past; to a period in the life of a man who has made Husum one of the literary centers of the world. Some 30,000 visitors come to the Storm-House each year. Schools especially are welcome.
